The Instagram parent company Facebook has announced that a bug that leaked and stored Instagram users password in a plain text file has been discovered, thus you might need to change your Instagram login details, this disclosure highlighted that security issue which saved millions of user’s passwords in plain text instead of the company’s system of “masking passwords using techniques that make them unreadable has been discovered.
Initially, the issue seems to be minor as reports had it that only tens of thousands of accounts were affected only to discover earlier this week that millions of Instagram account password are actually affected
“We discovered additional logs of Instagram passwords being stored in a readable format,” the company said. “We now estimate that this issue impacted millions of Instagram users.
We will be notifying these users as we did the others.”“Our investigation has determined that these stored passwords were not internally abused or improperly accessed,”
Facebook, however, claims that non of the accounts has been tampered with either by their employees or outsiders, actual figures of the affected accounts are yet to be made public by the social media giant, a statement from the Facebook team promised that the bug is been worked on and a notification will be sent to affected accounts as soon as possible, at the main time Facebook suggests that you enable two-factor authentication on your Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp account.
