The Nigerian government says it has “indefinitely suspended” Twitter’s operations in the country, the Ministry of Information and Culture announced in a statement on Friday
The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,
announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are
capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the
National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
The Twitter ban in Nigeria came just few days after Twitter deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari that was widely perceived as offensive.
In that tweet on Tuesday, the Nigerian leader threatened to deal with people in the country’s southeast, who he blames for the recurring attacks on public infrastructure in the region.
The tweet read :

“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand,”
referring to the brutal two-year Nigeria-Biafra war.
Twitter deleted the tweet after many Nigerians flagged and reported it.
Many Nigerians has condemn the ban on twitter by the federal government, rebelling it bias and un-democratic..
What does the ban mean?
Since the ban was issued today, a block on the twitter’s IP address (twitter.com) will be imposed by all the ISPs in the country(MTN, 9MOBILE, AIRTEL, GLO, ETC) with this ban, users in Nigerian wouldn’t be able to have access to the twitter portal.
This also means that businesses in Nigeria wouldn’t able to officially place ads twitter.
Nigerians who wants to access twitter can only do so through the backdoor, through VPNs and location changer apps like Edoztunnel VPN.
