The Nigerian government has imposed a mandatory tax on all calls, data purchases and sms made on any network in the country, this implementation came in to play as of February first 2020, unethically, Nigerians were not pre informed about this new VAT development only to see the charges after every call or SMS, subscribers now have to lay complains to the Ministry of communication via their values social handles.
The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy ” Dr Isa Pantami has urged the subscribers who expressed concerns over the VAT on calls, SMS and data to direct their questions to the Office of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Pantami said that he not aware of the 7.5% VAT as he wasn’t informed.
We are able to gather that the new tax on calls, SMS and data was a result the federal government new fiscal measures to increase revenue from non-oil sector.
Pantami in his statement signed by his spokesman Mrs Uwa Suleiman Said “While we appreciate the support and efforts of well-meaning Nigerians who have sought clarifications in a civil manner, we wish to inform the general public that the issues of VAT do not fall under the ministry’s purview.
“The office of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy is not mandated to handle VAT.
“All further enquiries and clarifications may henceforth be directed to the Federal Inland Revenue Service, being the proper institution for tax matters.
“In the same vein, we also wish to notify the general public that contrary to popular opinion in some quarters, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy had no prior consultation or awareness about the development

However most subscribers has laid complains on the new 7.5% VAT tax on calls, SMS and data as there tag it inappropriate, since the poor and middle class Nigerians can’t afford such charges, some had the argument that you pay tax for purchasing a service not while using the service as the case is the 7.5% VAT on calls, SMS and data.
This Charges are deducted on every calls made, SMS sent or data purchased as shown on the screenshot below
